Humidity and Static Control for Printing and Packaging
Dry air can make paper, film and labels difficult to handle. Static charge increases, sheets curl, dust is attracted to surfaces and feeding becomes less consistent. Humidity control does not correct every printing problem, but it removes one important source of process variation.
The system should raise RH evenly around the material and machine without sending visible droplets onto paper, ink, electrical cabinets or finished packaging.
Why dry air causes static
Paper and many films hold electrical charge more easily when the surrounding air is dry. The charge can make sheets stick together, repel, attract dust or discharge near sensitive equipment.
Increasing RH improves surface conductivity and allows charge to dissipate more readily. The practical target depends on material, process temperature and machine requirements.
Effects on paper and board
Paper exchanges moisture with the air. Sudden changes can cause curl, edge wave, register variation and dimensional movement.
Stable conditions in storage and production are more useful than a high RH only at the press. Materials should have time to condition before use.
Mist distribution
Place outlets where fog can mix with room air before reaching the machine or material. Avoid blowing saturated air directly at paper rolls, control panels or cold surfaces.
For long lines, several distribution points often provide better uniformity than one high-output outlet.
Sensor position and zoning
The sensor should represent the material-handling zone, not the direct discharge plume. Keep it away from doors, heaters, supply-air grilles and local exhaust.
Large plants may need separate control zones because prepress, printing, converting and storage can have different ventilation and heat loads.
Water quality
Minerals carried in ultrasonic mist can settle as white residue. Sensitive printing areas may require low-mineral water and regular tank cleaning.
Water treatment should be selected from local water data and the cleanliness requirement of the process.
System selection
Mist maker modules are suitable for OEM machine builders or local system integrators designing their own tanks and controls. Complete industrial humidifiers are suitable for room or line applications requiring automatic RH control.
Provide room dimensions, ventilation, target RH and process layout before sizing.
Commissioning checks
Measure RH at several points with production running. Observe whether fog reaches cold surfaces, paper stacks or electrical areas before evaporating.
Adjust outlet direction, airflow and sensor placement before increasing output. Poor distribution can look like insufficient capacity.
Project note: Humidity control works best when paper storage and production conditions are kept reasonably stable, not when RH changes sharply only during a press run.
